Building a More Sustainable Future: The Rapid Innovations Foundry
Updated: Sep 1
Rapid Innovations is taking an important step toward greater efficiency, sustainability, and in-house manufacturing with the development of a new foundry in Elkader, Iowa.
The primary purpose of the foundry is to reuse scrap steel generated through Rapid Innovations production. Rather than treating those materials as waste, the foundry will allow Rapid Innovations to repurpose them into new castings that can be used throughout the company’s product line.
This approach supports a larger goal: producing as many components as possible right here in Elkader while reducing the amount of scrap and production waste leaving the facility.
Starting Small and Building for the Future
The project will begin with a relatively small foundry operation focused on pouring ductile iron. The facility will initially produce large castings for products currently manufactured by Rapid Innovations.
Although the operation will begin with ductile iron, the facility is being designed with long-term flexibility in mind. If production needs change, the foundry could eventually transition to casting steel.
That flexibility will allow the operation to grow and adapt alongside Rapid Innovations.
Strengthening Local Manufacturing
Bringing casting production in-house provides several potential advantages. It gives Rapid Innovations greater control over the manufacturing process, reduces reliance on outside suppliers, and creates a productive use for materials already generated through daily operations.
Just as importantly, the project represents a continued investment in Elkader and the company’s local manufacturing capabilities.
By turning scrap material into new components, the foundry will help Rapid InnovationsTS create a more efficient production cycle—one that reduces waste, strengthens the supply chain, and supports continued growth for years to come.
